Cool or Tool? is an easy to use game for crew members aimed at creating better, safer, and more inclusive worksites. Each day you’ll be presented with scenarios involving typical worksite encounters – some good, some bad. Your job is to judge the action and correctly decide if the behaviour exhibited is “cool” or if the character at the center of the scene is acting like a “tool.” These practical scenarios will help users realize what is acceptable worksite behaviour. No one deserves to be uncomfortable or stressed at work out due to the unacceptable actions of their colleagues. Enjoy a light-hearted journey into what are usually uncomfortable and tense situations to learn how to create a construction industry that works for everyone.

In this time of a severe skilled labour shortage, recruitment and retention is a key priority for all construction sector businesses. Shaping positive worksite behaviour is key priority. Creating a company culture that respects equity, diversity and inclusion will translate into better productivity and safety outcomes. It will help attract and keep the best workers. Use The Cool or Tool? app to achieve this.

Employers often underestimate the financial impacts of hazing, harassment, and bullying on the worksite. These negative behaviours cause stress and distraction in the crew that can lead to turnover, lost time to accidents, injury related health care costs, legal actions, rehiring costs, and unproductivity.

The training is structured around these themes:

FOCUS
Focus on the positive outcomes of retention, safety, risk reduction, and productivity to facilitate the ‘unlearning’ of attitudinal biases and stereotypes.

BUILD
Build the awareness and competencies of management and workers to create a worksite culture that is welcoming, supportive, respectful and productive for all workers.

DEVELOP
Develop the specific knowledge and skills to confidently and effectively identify and address incidents on the work site.

MOTIVATE
Motivate all crew members to accept their role and responsibility for maintaining a healthy worksite culture by treating all colleagues with respect, dignity and consideration for their wellbeing.
